“Don’t wait until you reach your goal to be proud of yourself. Be proud of every step you take,” are words of Karen Salmansohn. You should be proud of yourself, no matter where you are. It doesn’t matter if you take a step back or a step forward. It’s so much easier to beat yourself up for something than to look on how far you have come and be proud of that.
Pride is such a strong word. It means: a feeling of pleasure and satisfaction that you get because you or people connected with you have done or got something good. Many of us usually think about the things we’ve done wrong or how we will never achieve goals that we set for ourselves. Yes, I know, sometimes it’s hard to look on the bright side, especially if you are in the state, where you want to give up. But, as I said thousands of times, we are not perfect; we all make mistakes, we all find ourselves stuck in the same place over and over again, we feel down, we wan’t to give up, but believe me or not, those things are also the ones that are part of our journey and as silly as it sounds, you should be proud of them too.
I will give you an example. Imagine a man who wants to lose 30kg. Firstly, that person should be proud of himself, because he admitted to himself that he needs to lose weight, start living healthier and because he accepted the help from the others. The first step, with everything, is usually the hardest part of the journey, but once you make it, only the sky is the limit. So, the first 10kg the man loses really quickly, but then he found himself stuck and the weight doesn’t move anywhere. That is the point, where determination and perseverance of the man are tested. Let’s say that he doesn’t give up and continue with losing weight. Imagine him, reaching that weight-loss of 30kg. He would probably jump through the roof. But not just because he lost that weight, put on his jeans from 20 years ago or better his health, he found the courage to do something he always wanted to do, he never gave up and most importantly he would be proud of every step he did on that journey. I know people who lose weight and then gain some back and they tear themselves apart for that. Don’t do that. You should be proud of yourself, even though you make a step back – you should always look at the bigger picture.
As I already said, it’s easier to criticize yourself, your flaws and mistakes, your body, your actions, your decisions – everything. Why not try something else? Instead of beating yourself up, try to remember all the good things about yourself, all the reasons why you are a great person, all the things you’ve done for others. You will need that confidence-boost in hard times. Self-criticism won’t make life any easier or solve any problems. Believe in yourself and everything you are, because if you don’t believe in yourself, who will?
There are so many reasons why you should be proud of yourself. If you are one of those people that had a really tough childhood or life in general, be proud of yourself. Be proud of yourself, because you survived everything that happened to you and were strong enough to go pass it. It was hard, but if you were strong enough to survive that, you can do anything. And even though it was one of the toughest times of your life, it made you stronger as a person.
If you started working on some of your ‘flaws’ or something you were never good at, you should be proud of yourself, because you even started improving yourself. Many people just complain about that and never do anything about it. You will improve, slowly but surely, just take step by step and be proud of every step you take, backwards or forward. It takes time to become good at something, but with hard work, everything is possible.
And there are some little things, that you should be proud of and that 90% of people don’t even realize. Helping other people, even a little things, such as carrying shopping bags for somebody or giving a place to sit on a bus to elderly, those are also things you should be proud of. Making somebody smile is probably the biggest achievement you can do. There are people out there that need your smile and even though you don’t realize, you can make somebody smile without even knowing that. Inspiring others, just like making them smile, is something you do without realizing it. You never know, especially through social media, who out there is following you and who sees an inspiration in you. It sounds crazy, but we all have someone that inspires us and why wouldn’t be that somebody you?
We are all human and we are on this planet for a reason. The fact is that the world wouldn’t be the same without you and even though there are 7,5 billion people on the Earth, you have a significant impact, not just on yourself, but also on the people that surround you. Whatever you do or want to try, always be proud of everything you achieve. Believe in yourself and your capabilities and never give up. Never stop dreaming, because dreams are something that will push you forward and when you reach them or your goals, you will feel proud as never before. Being proud is probably the most satisfying feeling in the world, because it means that you did something for yourself or others. I will finish this post with one more quote: “Love yourself and be proud of everything that you do, even your mistakes. Because even mistakes mean you are trying.” As long as you are trying, you are moving forward. Be proud of that.
Until next time,
